    Abstract: The automated tracking of objects in factories via real-time locating systems (RTLS) is gaining increased attention due to its improved availability, technical sophistication, and most of all, its plethora of applications. The tracking of workpieces through their production process, for example, unlocks a detailed understanding of timings, patterns, and bottlenecks. While research mostly focuses on technological advancements, the analysis of the generated data is often left unclear. We propose a visual analysis framework based on ultra-wide-band (UWB) RTLS tracking data of material flow for this purpose. With this, we present an analysis and define a practical approach for how factory-level data can be analyzed. Advanced algorithms adapted from non-adjacent research domains are used to process and detect anomalies in the data, which would otherwise be hidden behind oversimplified analysis methods. Our approach considers different levels of granularity for the analysis in its visualization and, therefore, scales with increasing data sizes effortlessly. We also generated a ground truth dataset of RTLS UWB data with labeled anomaly cases. Combined, we provide a full, end-to-end, efficient processing and multi-visualization analysis pipeline for self-contained yet generalizable UWB RTLS data.

    Abstract: Abstract The computational work to perform particle advection-based flow visualization techniques varies based on many factors, including number of particles, duration, and mesh type. In many cases, the total work is significant, and total execution time (“performance”) is a critical issue. This state-of-the-art report considers existing optimizations for particle advection, using two high-level categories: algorithmic optimizations and hardware efficiency. The sub-categories for algorithmic optimizations include solvers, cell locators, I/O efficiency, and precomputation, while the sub-categories for hardware efficiency all involve parallelism: shared-memory, distributed-memory, and hybrid. Finally, this STAR concludes by identifying current gaps in our understanding of particle advection performance and its optimizations.

    Abstract: Objective. Proton therapy is highly sensitive to range uncertainties due to the nature of the dose deposition of charged particles. To ensure treatment quality, range verification methods can be used to verify that the individual spots in a pencil beam scanning treatment fraction match the treatment plan. This study introduces a novel metric for proton therapy quality control based on uncertainties in range verification of individual spots. Approach. We employ uncertainty-aware deep neural networks to predict the Bragg peak depth in an anthropomorphic phantom based on secondary charged particle detection in a silicon pixel telescope designed for proton computed tomography. The subsequently predicted Bragg peak positions, along with their uncertainties, are compared to the treatment plan, rejecting spots which are predicted to be outside the 95% confidence interval. The such-produced spot rejection rate presents a metric for the quality of the treatment fraction. Main results. The introduced spot rejection rate metric is shown to be well-defined for range predictors with well-calibrated uncertainties. Using this method, treatment errors in the form of lateral shifts can be detected down to 1 mm after around 1400 treated spots with spot intensities of 1 × 107 protons. The range verification model used in this metric predicts the Bragg peak depth to a mean absolute error of 1.107 ± 0.015 mm. Significance. Uncertainty-aware machine learning has potential applications in proton therapy quality control. This work presents the foundation for future developments in this area.

    Abstract: Fundamental research into in situ visualization and analysis techniques is difficult to access for visualization researchers due to the overwhelming complexity and effort of constructing and managing in situ software stacks that allow reproducible evaluation of novel in situ visualization and analysis techniques. To address this problem, we describe EZ-ISAV, a work-in-progress towards a framework for easy construction of customizable in situ pipelines in container images. Designed for portability and ease of use, these images are intended to serve as proof-of-concept cases for in situ visualization and analysis research. Furthermore, we describe the EZ-ISAV repository, an open repository of turn-key, ready-made container images that can strongly reduce the overhead of developing and evaluating in situ techniques and provide improved reproducibility and portability of in situ visualization research.

    Abstract: Operation technology networks, i.e. hard- and software used for monitoring and controlling physical/industrial processes, have been considered immune to cyber attacks for a long time. A recent increase of attacks in these networks proves this assumption wrong. Several technical constraints lead to approaches to detect attacks on industrial processes using available sensor data. This setting differs fundamentally from anomaly detection in IT-network traffic and requires new visualization approaches adapted to the common periodical behavior in OT-network data. We present a tailored visualization system that utilizes inherent features of measurements from industrial processes to full capacity to provide insight into the data and support triage analysis by laymen and experts. The novel combination of spiral plots with results from anomaly detection was implemented in an interactive system. The capabilities of our system are demonstrated using sensor and actuator data from a real-world water treatment process with introduced attacks. Exemplary analysis strategies are presented. Finally, we evaluate effectiveness and usability of our system and perform an expert evaluation.

    Abstract: Abstract Data reduction is increasingly being applied to scientific data for numerical simulations, scientific visualizations and data analyses. It is most often used to lower I/O and storage costs, and sometimes to lower in-memory data size as well. With this paper, we consider five categories of data reduction techniques based on their information loss: (1) truly lossless, (2) near lossless, (3) lossy, (4) mesh reduction and (5) derived representations. We then survey available techniques in each of these categories, summarize their properties from a practical point of view and discuss relative merits within a category. We believe, in total, this work will enable simulation scientists and visualization/data analysis scientists to decide which data reduction techniques will be most helpful for their needs.

    Abstract: Uncertain field visualization is currently a hot topic as can be seen by the overview in this book. This article discusses a mathematical foundation for this research. To this purpose, we define uncertain fields as stochastic processes. Since uncertain field data is usually given in the form of value distributions on a finite set of positions in the domain, we show for the popular case of Gaussian distributions that the usual interpolation functions in visualization lead to Gaussian processes in a natural way. It is our intention that these remarks stimulate visualization research by providing a solid mathematical foundation for the modeling of uncertainty.

    Abstract: In this chapter, we provide a brief overview of the visualization of large vector fields on parallel architectures using integration-based methods. After briefly providing background, we describe the state of the art in corresponding research, focusing on parallel integral curve computation strategies. We analyze the relative benefits of two fundamental schemes and discuss algorithmic improvements presented recently. To conclude, we point out open problems and future research directions.

    Abstract: Understanding vector fields resulting from large scientific simulations is an important and often di fficult task. Integral curves, curves that are tangential to a vector fi eld at each point, are a powerful visualization method in this context. Application of integral curve-based visualization to very large vector field data represents a signifi cant challenge due to the non-local and data-dependent nature of integral curve computation, and requires careful balancing of computational demands placed on I/O, memory, communication, and processors. In this chapter we review several di erent parallelization approaches based on established parallelization paradigms (across particles, and data blocks) and present advanced techniques for achieving scalable, parallel performance on very large data sets.

    Abstract: Area-preserving maps arise in the study of conservative dynamical systems describing a wide variety of physical phenomena, from the rotation of planets to the dynamics of a fluid. The visual inspection of these maps reveals a remarkable topological picture in which invariant manifolds form the fractal geometric scaffold of both quasi-periodic and chaotic regions. We discuss in this paper the visualization of such maps built upon these invariant manifolds. This approach is in stark contrast with the discrete Poincare plots that are typically used for the visual inspection of maps. We propose to that end several modified definitions of the finite-time Lyapunov exponents that we apply to reveal the underlying structure of the dynamics. We examine the impact of various parameters and the numerical aspects that pertain to the implementation of this method. We apply our technique to a standard analytical example and to a numerical simulation of magnetic confinement in a fusion reactor. In both cases our simple method is able to reveal salient structures across spatial scales and to yield expressive images across application domains.

    Abstract: Harmonic analysis techniques are established and successful tools in a variety of application areas, with the Fourier decomposition as one well-known example. In this chapter, we describe recent work on possible approaches to use Harmonic Analysis on fields of arbitrary type to facilitate global feature extraction and visualization. We find that a global approach is hampered by significant computational costs, and thus describe a local framework for harmonic vector field analysis to address this concern. In addition to a description of our approach, we provide a high-level overview of mathematical concepts underlying it and address practical modeling and calculation issues. As a potential application, we demonstrate the definition of empirical features based on local harmonic analysis of vector fields that reduce field data to low dimensional feature sets and offers possibilities for visualization and analysis.

    Abstract: Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) is a highly effective method for simulations spanning a large range of spatiotemporal scales such as those encountered in astrophysical simulations. Combining research in novel AMR visualization algorithms and basic infrastructure work, the Department of Energy (DOE) Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) Visualization and Analytics Center for Enabling Technologies (VACET) has extended VisIt, an open source visualization tool that can handle AMR data without converting it to alternate representations. This paper focuses on two recent advances in the development of VisIt. First, we have developed streamline computation methods that properly handle multi-domain data sets and utilize effectively multiple processors on parallel machines. Furthermore, we are working on streamline calculation methods that consider an AMR hierarchy and detect transitions from a lower resolution patch into a finer patch and improve interpolation at level boundaries. Second, we focus on visualization of large-scale particle data sets. By integrating the DOE Scientific Data Management (SDM) Center’s FastBit indexing technology into VisIt, we are able to reduce particle counts effectively by thresholding and by loading only those particles from disk that satisfy the thresholding criteria. Furthermore, using FastBit it becomes possible to compute parallel coordinate views efficiently, thus facilitating interactive data exploration of massive particle data sets.

    Abstract: The paper describes the application of topological methods to the visualization of vortical flow patterns that arise in simulations from Computational Fluid Dynamics. Two techniques are presented: the first is concerned with the exploration of complicated, instanta- neous flow structures while the second one permits the visualization of their temporal evolu- tion in large-scale transient simulations. In both cases the mathematical framework is derived from the notion of parametric topology. This yields a unified formalism that permits to effi- ciently address the challenges raised by typical flow problems. The benefits of this approach are demonstrated in the analysis and visualization of transient vortical flows that undergo the phenomenon of vortex breakdown.

    Abstract: The depiction of a time-dependent flow in a way that effectively sup ports the structural analysis of its salient patterns is still a challenging problem for flow visualization research. While a variety of powerful approaches have been investigated for over a decade now, none of them so far has been able to yield repre sentations that effectively combine good visual quality and a physical interpretation that is both intuitive and reliable. Yet, with the huge amount of flow data generated by numerical computations of growing size and complexity, scientists and engineers are faced with a daunting analysis task in which the ability to identify, extract, and display the most meaningful information contained in the data is becoming absolutely indispensable.

    }

    Abstract: An optimal combustion process within an engine block is central to the performance of many motorized vehicles. Associated with this process are two important patterns of flow: swirl and tumble motion, which optimize the mixing of fluid within each of an engine’s cylinders. The simulation data associated with in-cylinder tumble motion within a gas engine, given on an unstructured, timevarying and adaptive resolution CFD grid, demands robust visualization methods that apply to unsteady flow. Good visualizations are necessary to analyze the simulation data of these in-cylinder flows. We present a range of methods including integral, feature-based, and image-based schemes with the goal of extracting and visualizing these two important patterns of motion. We place a strong emphasis on automatic and semi-automatic methods, including topological analysis, that require little or no user input.We make effective use of animation to visualize the time-dependent simulation data. We also describe the challenges and implementation measures necessary in order to apply the presented methods to time-varying, volumetric grids.

    Abstract: Using topology for feature analysis in flow fields faces several problems. First of all, not all features can be detected using topology based methods. Second, while in flow feature analysis the user is interested in a quantification of feature parameters like position, size, shape, radial velocity and other parameters of feature models, many of these parameters can not be determined using topology based methods alone. Additionally, in some applications it is advantageous to regard the vector field as a superposition of several, possibly simple, features. As topology based methods are quite sensitive to superposition effects, their precision and usability is limited in these cases. In this paper, topology based analysis and visualization of flow fields is estimated and compared to other feature based approaches demonstrating these problems.
